The D household is not your stereotypical American household in many ways. One of the key ways that we set ourselves apart is when it comes to the T.V. remote. It is NOT always in Steven's hand. In fact, he would argue it is in MY hand most of the time. We hardly EVER agree on a television show to watch. It's actually quite comical. We have come up with very create ways to make fun of each other's favorite T.V. shows. We berate the show so badly sometimes that the other person will change the channel just to get the annoying jabbering to stop. It works both ways..and it works well. For the record...some of the commentary we make about the shows is not P.C. I realize that. We're normal down to earth people and sometimes say things we would say in a political speech. That's what makes us awesome. We don't hold prejudices against race, creed, sexuality, etc. so don't get all pissy if you're offended :)
Some examples of the television shows that I enjoy, that Steven makes fun of include:
Iyanla Fix My Life...Steven likes to say her name 10000 different weird annoying ways and then make comments like "Yeah, you tell 'em Iyanla" whenever she says something profoundly wonderful.
Dr. Phil...Steven says (throught the ENTIRE episode) things like, "Thank you Dr. Phil" (sarcastically of course). He also likes to comment on the guests...the other day there was an episode I was watching and Steven kept telling me that the guest on the show was a, "Ho Fo Sho!".
Scandal...Steven simply tells me this show is stupid.
Grey's Anatomy...Gay's Anatomy. Steven hates this show because the first episode I made him watch was the one where the espresso machine exploded at the coffee shop. He said this show was so fake he couldn't stand it...the episode was pretty stupid.
Some of Steven's shows that I like to make fun of include:
American PIckers...I refer to this show as "American Butt Pickers"
TruTV...Steven likes pretty much EVERY show on TruTV (partly because he knows I hate almost every show on TruTV). I refer to every show on this network as FakeTV.
Property Brothers...I call this show "Property Moes" because I am 99.9% positive that the "brothers" on this show are actually gap partners with each other, but they called it "Property Brothers" because the demographic who watch that show aren't ready for gay contractors.
So what DO we agree on (clearly we must agree on SOME shows...we are still married afterall.)
#1) Revenge. If you haven't seen this show you are SERIOUSLY missing out. This is definitely the number one show that we both agree is awesome.
#2) The Walking Dead. Okay....I am more involved in this show than Steven but he is getting more into it.
#3) The Voice. This show is actually funny because Steven thinks, since I am someone who's been involved in music for most of my life, that I am a more accurate judge of vocal abilities than he is. We both love watching the show, but during every performance Steven will ask me, Is he/she good? It's super cute.
#4) Bar Rescue. Don't ask me how Steven got me to like this show...I honestly feel like he brainwashed me because I used to HATE It but now I really actually like it.
...I feel like we need a #5 to round out the list..but I can't think of anything.
THE NEWS! We both like watching the news. But we disagree on the amount of time. I prefer a good 1/2 hour of national news while Steven likes 1/2 hr of local followed by 1/2 hour of national.
So now that we've added a 3rd party to our family we've also added 2 additional hands that want that remote control. M.D. is OBSESSED with the T.V. remote. He loves to pick it up, throw it down, push the buttons, put it in his mouth. He's actually pretty skilled with the buttons. We have a universal remote so it controls the sound system, t.v, cable, and blu ray player all in one shot. M.D. has gotten very skilled at turning up the volume on the sound system, switching from "T.V." mode to "Listen to Music" mode, and muting the sound.
Speaking of M.D. and the remote...I've started exploring children's programming to see what options are available for our little one, seeing as I won't be able to get away with watching The Walking Dead with him for much longer....I have to say I'm pretty annoyed. I hate almost ALL of the children's shows on T.V. right now. That Yo Gabba Gabba is absolutely terrifying. Steven and I both watched about 3 minutes of it and had to change the channel.
I don't exactly know at what age the boy/girl T.V. show line is drawn..but I have to say my favorite show that I've found is on Disney Jr. and I'm 99% positive it's intended for little girls. Dangit. It's called Doc McStuffin. Anybody heard of it? It's amazingly adorable.
Okay...now I'm 100% positive it's for little girls...check out the promo icon for the show:

Dang. Anyways...I'm really looking for some suggestions. I honestly am thinking about just stocking up on Veggie Tales videos and some good old Sesame Street and having him watch those instead. This new-fangled T.V. for kids is giving me a headache already.
I am so excited for this weekend. It is FINALLY going to be warm outside! Steven threw his back out, so M.D. is going to tag along with me for a baby shower tomorrow for Steven's cousin, and then we are having a visit from Grandpa John E. and Judy on Sunday. We will definitely be squeezing in some park-time as well.
Hope every one has a safe and fun weekend!
