So here it is. The update on the cloth diaper movement through the D household. We're off to a slow start, I'll be honest. It's not for lack of love for the gDiapers, just more of an adjustment period we are going through (all of us).
We received our 6 gPants, 12 cloth inserts & 6 bummies prefolds (to use as inserts).
I am a HUGE fan of the cloth inserts...not so much the prefolds. They make the diaper HUGE and it's difficult to shove M.D. into pants/pjs when he's got a prefold in. Obviously, the cloth diapers in general are more "puffy" than disposables but with just the cloth inserts he's still looking cute :).
The gDiapers are SUPER easy to use. I mean...honestly, I was nervous. They are so easy to use, it's stupid. All that a change involves (now...we're talking pee here...) is a quick removal of the dirty cloth insert (you can pull it out by the back part that's completely dry...) and throw that into the wet bag. No pee-touching required. Then slip the clean insert in and velcro that baby back on your baby. M.D. doesn't seem to mind them at all. In fact, I think he likes them. This is simply because I think he looks effing adorable in them so let him squirm around on the floor in just the gDiaper and this baby LOVES being naked (or as close to it as I'll let him be on the white carpet) so he loves squirmy time in his gDiaper.

I've heard lots of horror stories about skinny babies having trouble with cloth diapers. They don't have the waist or thighs to hold the cloth tight and to prevent major leakage. I have to say, M.D. has himself a decent set of thighs. However, his waist is still pretty small. We haven't had any issues with leakage though thus-far. *Fingers Crossed*
So, besides them being easy to use I also love that they are easy to wash. First of all, you only have to wash the insert every time (unless they have a huge poop...which I will discuss in a minute). BUT I like to still wash the outer shell and liner daily. I figure I have a weeks' worth of shells & liners so what's the harm in putting a clean shell on M.D. every day? I still have to do laundry every other day to keep those inserts clean and well stocked.
Now for the poop issue. I'm a huge chicken shit. Literally. I'm nervous about what the hell I'm going to do when he poops in these cloth inserts. So my solution? I've gotten lucky so far with him not pooping any time that he's been in his cloth so far. However, this past weekend he was looking like he had the urge. I threw a disposable on him. Bad Mom! I know i need to face this monster head-on, but so far we haven't come to that road. Interestingly enough, I read online (on a pro-cloth diapering website) that human waste is NEVER supposed to be put in landfills...this makes sense when you think about it. So technically you're supposed to scrape out the crap in the disposable diaper before throwing them anyways. Now, I realize that next-to-nobody actually does this...but it does make me feel better like, Ok. I'm supposed to be doing this anyways so it's not a big deal to do it now.
I am in the process of purchasing 3 more packs of cloth linserts (6 inserts/pack). This will bring my grand total of cloth inserts to 30. I am thinking this may be our magic number. This would allow us to keep 15 inserts at Grandma's (daycare) for daily rotation and 15 inserts at home for nightly/weekend rotation.
Another bonus to the gDiapers...they are super freaking cute. I can't wait to order a few more in fun colors. The green & orange are cute...although I'd like to mix some blue ones in especially for little M.D. I wanted to keep it somewhat neutral though in case of any future babies requiring cloth diapers....far, far future.

In other news...Steven and I are having our first overnight away from baby M.D. this week. It's my best friend Amanda's wedding on Friday so we will be away for Thursday & Friday night celebrating her big day! I can't wait! I'm so excited to be IN her wedding and, to celebrate, I got my nails done for the first time since M.D. was born. Before he was born I would go get a pedicure every few weeks because I honestly couldn't reach my toes to keep them up so I had to pay someone else to do it. It wasn't all that bad. I had so much fun getting them done again, though, and I even got to enjoy the french-style manicure. I used to ALWAYS get the acrylic pink & white nails but that's not very practical with baby...so this style allows the cute-factor with function as well. So Happy!
