Hope everyone had a happy and fun weekend! The D household had a semi-happy but fun weekend. We brought M.D. to go visit his Great-Grandma on Saturday morning. He did AWESOME...until the last hour. This is the negotiating you do with yourself when you have a colicky baby. It's a trade-off. You will never get through a full event and think...wow..that entire time went perfectly well! This is probably the case with non-colicky babies also, though I argue that non-colicky baby problems don't usually involve screaming at the top of their lungs for seemingly never-ending chunks of time...so all of the mothers of non-colicky babies can suck it. I could deal with spit up, throw up, peeing in inappropriate places (this is the baby I'm talking about, of course). You have NO idea. We made it through 2 of the 3 hours with little-to-no crying, fussing, or screaming...everyone got a chance to hold a happy baby..and he gave smiles out like candy on Halloween. Phew. We won't talk about the last hour.
On Sunday M.D.'s Nana came to visit. God sent us a blessing in the form of a woman who raised 3 colicky babies. There is nothing more comforting than having someone visit who is, A) Your mother..so you don't have to dress up, shower, clean your house before she comes...and more importantly...
B) A woman who has experience with colic. She was not dismayed in the least when M.D. started his screaming episode(s)..yes...multiple..and knew all of the tricks of the trade to calm him down (even if just temporarily).
Speaking of screaming...that's M.D.'s newest trick. It's one of my favorites...or not. He doesn't necessarily cry as much anymore. I mean...he still cries...screams...at times. However, he's advanced in his abilities and has figured out in that giant noggin of his that if he screams, not cries, but screams at the top of his lungs he can get attention. And he utilizes this new tool to the best of his abilities. I would definitely say, at this point, that he is overutilizing his new-found ability. Steven and I just laugh because he will scream so loud that the dogs cock their heads and then immediately will stop...and look at you...like, Did you hear that? Yes, Mason. We heard you. Thank you for showing off your lung power. You sound like a kid on the rollercoaster at Disney World...yet you are here, sitting on our laps, in our house, in MN. What Talent!!

We've also started teething...that is a a post all of it's own which will come later. I can't talk about it until he breaks that first tooth through...which hopefully will be soon. Because this teething has started, anything & everything is now fair game to soothe those aching gums. On Friday..it just happened to be my bottle of Diet Mtn Dew. The child who needs caffeine like I need a hole in my head.
The irony is great.
More tomorrow :)
